The Living Islands Movement is providing a briefing session to their members which is open to all.  Here is the invitation letter they sent to members.

This is a follow up to the email about the Integrated Waste Management Action Group (IWMAG) planning application which requires submissions before 20 December.

LIM is arranging a briefing session for Members and Friends to help to further explain the purpose of the IWMAG application, the details of the proposal, the next steps, and most importantly, what you can do to help. The Member Briefing session will be held on Saturday 14th December at 10:30am at the Mui Wo Sports Centre, Squash Courts.

This is a really important new development, which uses an innovative plan to eliminate the need for the Government to build the proposed incinerator at Shek Kwu Chau. It provides solutions to the challenge of solving Hong Kong’s waste problem, so we hope you can come along to the Briefing to share your thoughts on the proposal and to express your opinions.

Mechanical Sorting of Mixed Waste

Sorting our waste no longer needs to involve people manually sorting out paper, plastic, metal and organic components, it can be done automatically by machines.  This video shows just one of many solutions available.

You all know that Hong Kong is facing a massive problem around handling its waste. Had you stopped to think why the government plans to build an Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) on reclaimed land next to Shek Kwu Chau Island and are not considering existing reclaimed land or for that matter why are they not looking at using the existing landfill sites.  Well a group of individuals have put in an application to the Town Planning Board to have 4 existing sites rezoned to allow IWMF’s to be built, rather than just relying on 1 site currently planned by the government.  You can read about their proposal and learn how to make a submission before 20 Dec via their website – https://wastehk.org/submission/

So if you are interested in:

Then come along to the discussion with the “Integrated Waste Management Action Group” (IWMAG) who consists of various NGO’s, professionals and members of the public who are knowledgeable in the issues which relate to the development and operation of a comprehensive, truly integrated waste management (IWM) system for the whole of Hong Kong.

The speakers on the night will be Mr Ian Brownlee and Ms Louise Preston.  Mr Brownlee is the managing director of planning and development consultancy MasterPlan Limited, who facilitated the IWMAG application.  Ms Preston is the chair of Living Islands Movement and there will be a team of experts there to answer your questions.
